Dr. Whitaker's Top Supplements for Diabetes

As General Manager of Forward Nutrition, I get a lot of questions about supplements. These days, many of you are asking what Dr. Whitaker recommends when facing a significant health concern like diabetes.

Are there specific supplements he has recommended for years? Are there supplements Dr. Whitaker has had success using with patients to manage blood sugar naturally? Are there different supplements to control blood sugar, target Syndrome X, manage pre-diabetes or beat type 2 diabetes? What about weight loss -- does Dr. Whitaker have suggestions for that?

The short answer (and that's what blogs are for, short answers) is yes, there are many different supplements for diabetes and related blood sugar concerns. Over the next few posts, I'll focus on Dr. Whitaker's favorites, the tried-and-true, and as new ones come along, you'll be sure to hear about them here.

Vanadium: A Cornerstone of the Whitaker Wellness Approach

According to Dr. Whitaker, one of the most effective and intriguing nutritional supplements for managing blood sugar levels is vanadium. This trace mineral lowers blood sugar by mimicking insulin and improving the cells’ sensitivity to insulin. Studies show that supplementation with vanadium (as vanadyl sulfate) markedly lowers fasting glucose and improves other measures of diabetes.

In one study, eight people with type 2 diabetes who received 50 mg of vanadyl sulfate twice a day for four weeks were found to have a 20 percent reduction in average fasting blood sugar, which lasted well after the mineral was discontinued. The only reported adverse effect was minor gastrointestinal distress during the first few days of the study.

Dr. Whitaker's suggested dose of vanadyl sulfate is 30 mg daily. If you need extra support and are under a doctor’s care, you can take up to 100 mg per day.

Pretty powerful stuff. And that's just one of many solutions. Look for more specific recommendations in upcoming posts, and keep the questions coming!

I seem to have a problem. I have recently started taking Glucose Essentials and Neuro-Vascular Support. Immediately I started to suffer black explosive diarrhea accompanied by severe stomach cramping. In the two formulas, there is only one ingredient that I have never taken before. That is, Pterocarpus Marsupium Extract. I can find no information for this extract that says black diarrhea would be a side effect. Is there anyone who has experienced this reaction by taking these two formulas together, or from the above ingredient? When I stopped taking the two formulas, my system went back to normal. I then started both formulas again, today, only to have the problem repeat again. Could I possibly be allergic to this ingredient?

I have the same problemand symptoms. But was not awre of any problems ,until a recent delivery had a new warning in the package.I have had the problem for some time and never considered the supplements because of Dr. Whitaker's newsletter which stated that their are no side effects fromhis resaerch over a long period time. What damage could this have caused to my organs over the time frame that i have been reguarlytaken the supplements.

Studies have shown that the vanadyl sulfate in Glucose Essentials can cause abdominal discomfort and darkening or loosening of stools in some individuals. To minimize the discomfort, I would suggest either cutting back on your dose until sypmtoms ease, or stopping completely and then gradually re-introducing the product (starting with one capsule a day, then going to two and then three over the course of a couple of weeks as your body adjusts), to see if you can avoid these effects. Vanadyl sulfate remains Dr. Whitaker's #1 recommendation for healthy blood sugar, and he continues to use it with his patients at the Whitaker Wellness Institute with great success. Best of luck to you in your continued health journey!

I am 57 years old and I have been a diabetic for about 7 years, I have tried it the Doctor's way and now I have tried it my way. They had me on insulin and pills and all it did was make me fatter, when I followed their rules, did the diet and all and my sugar was still high. I have since went off all the medication lost 80 lbs over 1 and 1/2 years and have maintained for 2 years at 150ish. I am 5 ft tall so this is alot easier to carry than 224 was. My sugar is still way too high but under 200 I tended to stay sick and miss alot of work because of the medicine and now my eyes are beginning to stay blurred all the time. You were recommended by a friend, his levels dropped by 200 points Please send me information and let me see if your product would help my sugar drop. thank you, Barbara
